New European satellite captures startling photo of Earth from space
Clouds swirl above the surface of the Earth in this photo taken on Aug. 7 from the European Space Agency’s newest satellite, MSG-3. The satellite, which launched July 5, is designed to constantly face Earth and capture high-resolution images for weather forecasting. In addition to its weather-watching capabilities, MSG-3 will allow scientists to better understand the planet’s climate processes using a radiation sensor that measures solar and infrared energy emanating from the Earth.
