More than 50,000 spectators and scientists flocked to remote northern Australia to watch the region’s first total solar eclipse in 1,300 years, according to SPACE.com. Despite some partial cloud cover, observers were still able to see the eclipse, which lasted for slightly longer than two minutes. The dramatic event is the first since 2010 and will be the last until 2015.

Depending on where people are in the eclipse’s path, some may witness an annular eclipse in which the moon blocks out all but a ring of the sun. The event will be the first time in 18 years that such an eclipse is visible from the continental United States.
