PHOTOS: What zoo captivity looks like around the world
Zoos are one of the more ethically dodgy areas for conservationists and animal lovers. Animals kept in captivity are always looking for a way out — if for no other reason than to satisfy an innate curiosity about the outside world. There are few events that demonstrate the ingenuity of our non-human brethren like when they outwit human captors. In October 2008, hunters in Pope Valley, Calif., came across a mountain lion and her three cubs and began shooting at them. The mother was killed, one cub was never seen again, and the two survivors were taken to the Sonoma Wildlife Rescue. One of the cubs had a broken leg that required his paw to be amputated, and the other had a minor fracture, but today both are alive and well. The hunters were charged with 22 counts of crimes, including animal cruelty. Kyla and Kuma will remain at Sonoma Wildlife Rescue for the rest of their lives because California law prohibits releasing them into the wild once they’ve been in captivity.See more rescued zoo babies.
